We are so obsessed with doing that we have no time and no imagination left for being. As a result, men are valued not for what they are but for what they do or what they have - for their usefulness.

We have a strange immigration policy for a nation of immigrants. And it’s a policy unfit for today’s world.

The economy of the last century was primarily based on natural resources, industrial machines and manual labor. Many of these resources were zero-sum and controlled by companies. If someone else had an oil field, then you did not. There were only so many oil fields, and only so much wealth could be created from them.

Today’s economy is very different. It is based primarily on knowledge and ideas — resources that are renewable and available to everyone. Unlike oil fields, someone else knowing something doesn’t prevent you from knowing it, too. In fact, the more people who know something, the better educated and trained we all are, the more productive we become, and the better off everyone in our nation can be.

This can change everything. In a knowledge economy, the most important resources are the talented people we educate and attract to our country. A knowledge economy can scale further, create better jobs and provide a higher quality of living for everyone in our nation.

To lead the world in this new economy, we need the most talented and hardest-working people. We need to train and attract the best.

Thoughtful, necessary Washington Post op-ed on the knowledge economy and immigration reform by Mark Zuckerberg. (via explore-blog)

Inderpal Wig: It's a sad day to be a "Sikh" - So I Pray.

inderpalwig:

There’ll be as many definitions of a Sikh as the number of people you ask. Sadly, that’s the truth. For me though, regardless of form or structure, the only two lessons I’ve learned and kept close to my heart and soul about being Sikh is that it means

1. You’re a student of life, and

I go about everyday as a student of life, learning from others and my surroundings. I believe in this concept of we are one, I see ourselves as energy which might’ve come from a singular source some like to theorize as god, the big bang theory or whatever it might be it doesn’t really matter right now in my existence nor do I think it ever will but one thing I am learning is you and I are very much alike than different.

The old world philosophies tried to touch upon certain topics such as “energy” in their own ways during their times, I’m not too sure about those who believe in “preserving” the past or how something was said as a ritual. Natural progression has been to add to the knowledge as we see as the truth or we change it. The spiritual teachings, western philosophy and now quantum physics all try to explore what it means to be us, here.

As the human consciousness matures I believe there is a moral compass and it should be applied in helping set direction as we define our paths when observing or practicing belief systems.

My two cents on this video: Modern science just like modern religion, a powerful institution which believes in the profit not the truth. Hippy or not, you’re still an idiot if you’re not questioning everything. #OBEY
